Laughingmouse asks:Greenest Farm Animals?

Which smaller farm animals have the least impact on our environment?

I ask because urban homesteaders try to choose animals based on how little space and pollution they create when balanced about the amount of food they produce.

I'm not sure

I'm not entirely sure, but I would think perhaps chickens and other birds. The reason for this is because they can get a lot of their food from the ground if you allow them to be free range. Also, you can eat their eggs for a long time before you butcher them for food. Also, they don't make an extensive amount of excrement. Again, if they're free range, you probably won't even notice it.

Chicken style

I think that chickens probably offer the best return based on several factors, not the least of which would be relative ease in their care and raising. They're pretty automatic. When we lived in the San Fernando valley we had a few and they kept us in fresh eggs without a lot of muss, and that was a fairly urban (or at least suburban) setting.
