Apple cider vinegar
Yes, put about an inch of apple cider vinegar in the kitchen, or whereever the flies are. Leave it there until they are gone. They will try to go in the get a drink but will drown and die.

Speaking of spiders...
Don't spiders eat dust mites too? I rarely see a spider in our condo, but every now and then one of our cats will find one.

you could always
import fruit fly eating spiders.... they eat the flies they clean the house of other flying things, your fruit is untouched.. everybody is happy..

Fighter spiders
I'm also inclined towards the little eight legged eating machines. In fact, although we don't have fruit to concern us, we always try to keep a couple of spiders in the house to keep the environment devoid of too many flies or other wee pesties.
