I have heard about homes being built with gray water systems, meaning water form laundry, dish washing, and shpwering is sent to a cistern, then used for watering the garden.

Since this water has been used, already, it carries with it many substances that aren't fit for human consumption.

How is it purified before it is used as water for vegetables you plan to eat later?

It's not an issue

Much like fertilizer, you wash the plants before you eat them. It doesn't have to be purified. Actually water from dish washing is generally full of organic particles that are great for the garden.

Gray water vs. stink water

We agree with Frankie--normal household detergents are rendered harmless by the time they have an impact. But, the grass is always greener over the septic tank! (Thanks, Mrs. I can't remember right now)
