Do you plant any plants that repel those garden bandits, snails and suchlike? What do you plant?

lavender...
repels greenfly.. so plant that near any plants that are susceptable. It's useful for other things too.. :)

oh forgot..
for slugs and snails.. beer traps are the best. Bury some old jam jars around your plants with openings showing.. and put a couple of inches of beer in each... you'llbe amazed (and repelled) at how many you collect.

My brother would say "What a way to go!" Seriously, thank you for that tip. I've never heard of beer traps. Simple, and no poison to leach into the garden.
