I have a mature hazlenut in my garden.. We don't get many nuts from it, because there is a colony of squirells atthe bottom of our garden, and they get most of them! My neighbours want me to cut the tree down, because they say the squirells are pests and i am encouraging them... but to my mind, god put nuts on the earth for squirells and depriving them of their food is wrong... What should I do> retain my neighbours good graces and get rid of the tree.. or leave itthere for the poor squirells...?

Listen to your conscience

It is these small incidents that actually test the integrity of our choices. It is easy to say that I love plants, animals and nature, but difficult to practically potray our feelings if we think that may make me look like a harsh person. Decide what you really want to do. Live with neighbours who might one day get tired of all the trees in the neighborhood becasue of the foliage they have to clean or the squirrels, birds etc. living in it or leave a good tree all by itself that is providing nourishment to the squirrels, making your yard look greener, providing shade, and not to forget the oxygen you and the neighbors breathe.
Do stick to the decision once made.

What will happen to them

Well I can understand the dilemma, but I'm not sure it's fair to go around cutting down trees and mowing over habitats because we feel the creatures that live there are "pests". I mean sure they can sometimes get on our nerves, but I suppose it's only fair to remember that the earth is their home too. If you cut down the tree, where will they go? But ultimately you've got to do what's best for everyone. Wish you neighbour felt more for the little critters and had a greater appreciation for a tree that had grown so well...

i'm not popular

I've been resisting cutting down the hazlenuts for years now... my relationswiththe neighbours has gradually deteriorated lol. I am glad though that everyone here agrees with me. I wouldn't dream of cutting it down. Even if i do keep finding buried nuts where my crocus bulbs used to be lol!

The wee darlins'

I know that some folks get weirded out about squirrels, but they are very clever critters that are only pests to people who expect a bigger share of creation than they deserve. I love to watch the little darlins scurry about and I hope you'll leave their old venerable home standing!

imma nut lover

you say the word "nuts" alot. you have an obsession with squirrel nuts. and you shouldnt cut down that nutty tree because it produces nuts which are good. go squirrels and nuts. btws you spelled "squirrel" wrong. kbye
ps. if you cut down the tree the sqirrels will take revenge and get a different kind of nuts aka yours.
