Next time you're making guacamole, take one of the pits, stick three toothpicks in it, and balance it over a glass of water with just the end getting wet. Soon you'll have a beautiful vine that grows and grows. You won't get any avocados from it, but you will have a beautiful vine that can shade a window from the inside, and make the inside air more breathable!

Sunny or Shaded?

We are peeling avocados as we write! Does your technique work better in full sun or otherwise?

my mother does this

all the time... she keeps them out of the direct sunlight while they sprout and once they have shoots she moves them to more light.. you also need to watch they don'tgo moldy, so not too much water coverage

heretoday

my mum's kitchen is like a jungle of creeping vines! You almost expect Tarzan to come swinging through into the living room!

She has the green magic touch, and can make anything grow with seemingly no effort.

I've done this!

I've done this several times, although I never get them to live long enough to sprout lots of vines....usually only one or two and then they start to die. :(

stavy's mom...

...does her avocado pits like I do. Use a glass jar that will give the roots room to grow.

Absolutely monster plant

There was a local Mexican restaurant that had one avocado pit that climbed over the walls and up the ceiling. I always wanted to grow one that outrageously big, but haven't had the luck yet. But it goes to show you how much you can get from one lonely pit that you'd chuck out otherwise...
