Laughingmouse asks:Reclaiming Yarn?

I love to crochet but find that buying new yarn can be expensive.

Is there an easy way to reclaim yard from sweaters and other knits one buys at second hand stores?

How to reclaim yarn from second hand sweaters.

If you want to reclaim yarn from sweaters, you need to find those that don't have seams that were sewn together with regular thread. These will produce many short peices of yarn. First, remove the tag without cutting the yarn; carefull cut the thread attaching the tag to the sweater. Find where the collar is attached to the sweater and start there. Try to find the seam that attaches the two and start at one end and keep unraveling!

Dip in hot water

I remember how my grandmother used to unravell the old yarn from old sweaters and then dip it in hot water for a while to loosen the yarn and smoothen it. The yarn from old sweaters tend to get all curled up so this was a good way to make them new and reuse them.
