Here is a great tool to to calculate your usage... http://www.csgnetwork.com/elecenergycalcs.html ... so I did the calculation and each load to dry costs 30c ... not much but it might depends on a couple of things... how old is the dryer... how full is it... do you use dryer sheets... over time it does add up and your clothes probably smell better when putting them out in the air.
It's one of those things about going green... the money shouldn't be the goal... it's about reducing your carbon footprint.
Not only will you save energy and money hanging your clothes out to dry, clothes stay newer longer as there is no need for a "lint" filter. The cloth does not shed it's fibers as quickly.
During the spring & summer, I always hang my clothes outside to dry. It is time-consuming and like Bart said, I don't save a lot of money, but there's just something about the smell of air-dryed clothes...
I recently read a book called "Why Does Popcorn Cost So Much At the Movies" and it really went in-depth about how various sellers arrive at their pricing levels. In the case of hanging laundry out to dry (as opposed to machine drying them), do you feel that is the wisest use of your time?
