To truly live s self sufficient lifestyle, adults have to pretty much stay in the home, instead of spending their daylight hours working in offices and commuting.

I've thought about this
I work for myself, so that isn't an issue. I garden, so that is covered. For me, it wouldn't really take much.

Not true... "stay in the home"
You don't have to stay at home to lead a self sufficient life style... there are plenty of jobs that you could work outdoors... you can live closer to your job and walk to work every day...
I really don't think you have to give up anything... if I was driving I would give up my car... who wants to be stuck in traffic anyway...
