The dream of reaching out and colonising other worlds is fast becoming more of a reality with more countries joining in the attempts to reach the stars. Do you think mankind has matured enough to be able to live on another planet without making the same mistakes we have with this one ?

Living among the stars

I have this fear stavy that mankind will make most of the same mistakes even if we had the opputunity to live in another star or planet...it seems to be in nature for us to forget and not learn from past mistakes....but I know I should not sound pessimist...so hopefully when the time comes..they would send people like you, terra, heretoday, bart and me who value the importance of nature and perhaps be able to build a society that is based on environmental friendly principles....:)

sadly though

Atula.. i don'tth ink it's likely to happen in our lifetime. Or even our children's lifetimes. But someday.. and who knows, maybe by then we'll have learned the lessons. The new generations are more aware and more active than we are.

I would definitely...

be pleased if it was possible so... but venturing out into space has complications that I believe current technology cannot cope with. if I would make a wild guess I am to say here that whenever human genome can be supplemented with the genes from deinococcus radiodurans the most rediation-resistant living thing (bacterium) and Rana sylvatica the frog that hybernates in ice, the space travel will be possible.

once again

you've got me keewi.. I am afraid i don't know what you mean. I think you are saying pace travel would please you.. but i don't know what else?
Comments:
i am saying that, when freezing and then a while later defrosting human bodies with no harm at all can be accomplished and when we know how to cope with the effects of space radiation, the sapce travel will be possible.
btw, cryogenic hybernation (freezing-defrosting thing) is crucial because if we fully awake in long space travels the lack of gravity would cause enormous damage to muscles.

We believe that God

Created ALL things-not just our microscopic speck of galaxial matter we fondly refer to as Earth. Heretoday is right about some folks being less mature than others, and that human nature is exactly that--human nature. Sort of scary, is it not?

I don't think 'god' comes into it

myself heretoday... I think we've outgrown the concept. well many have anyway... faith is a good thing I guess, and people will always believe, but those that reach for the stars i think will leave religion behind... but not necessarily 'god'...

i take it you

agree with me then TMF?
It seems to me that 'religion' is the main cause of conflict on our little planet... i would hope we wouldn't take it with us to the stars...
Comments:
What I was trying to convey is exactly that; how will the religions of one world to another coexist, or are we going to be stuck with more religious difficulties or war. Will we be mature enough to let these prejudices die?
religion is not a naturally out grown concept; "god" is. the purpose of religion is controlling unrest among deprived and badly ruled communities using the means of such intengible sentimental elements.
henceforth as lon gas there are power-mongers and tyrants there will always be "religion".
correction: is. the purpose of religion is controlling unrest among deprived and badly ruled communities -by- using the means of such intengible sentimental elements.

religion has

always been used by those in power to control the masses.. My hope is that by the time we are ready forthe stars, we'll have all outgrown it.
Comments:
you are right about that but there is twist... god concept is born out of pschological defense mechanisms and congnitive human mind does'nt stop there as it adheres new fantasies and ideas upon the cited "God concept"...
now, that expansion of the concept of godliness may be called "beliefs"... the word "religion" comes into play when those fantasies are "bundled up" to produce a "tool" for "affecting" masses of people.
as you can see, if we ever make space-faring a real feasibility there may not be christianism, jewism, islam, hinduism etc but there will be a "religion" as long as there are maddened-power-hungry people out there...

I don't believe so

We haven't even learned our lessons on EARTH yet, let alone going to other planets. The way we are right now...our nature is to try to dominate.

Fundamental Changes..?.

Great question, stavy. I think that I have to agree with atula that we aren't mature enough to leave our prejudices and bad behaviours back on earth. Another question has to be asked as well. For example, do any of the Earth's major religions still hold relevancy as we move out into space? Or does God, or our conception of God, cease to be all-powerful, and become just the god of our earth?

Nope, not yet

No, I don't think we're mature enough for it at all. It seems we can't even take care of the planet we have and are having to make huge efforts to try to correct all the damage we've been doing as it is. It'll still be a while before we could really do it, I think.

some say there is a scale of advancement level

'0' means that efficiency of facilating earthly recources is at maximum '1' stands for the fullest efficiency of commanding the solar system's recources and '2' meaning that humanity has full fledgedly maximized the control over earth and solar system and is already expanding out into galaxy... and one more thing; it is also said that we are not currently in even the '0'th stage.
