I know the idea is simply replacing your plastic bottles with steel...but does it make any difference in cooling...

Metal is cooler

We have recently gone with stainless steel and aluminum water bottles. They seem to keep water colder for much longer. After 7-8 hours at room temperature, the water is definitely pretty cold. They do "sweat" however - so those bottle sleeves may help. That said, plastic bottles also have condensation - but the water inside gets warmer and slightly weird tasting (thanks to using #5 bottles and not BPA-embued polycarbonate). A friend also uses her stainless steel water bottle for milk and warm drinks - and she says it works great (and cleans well if the bottle neck is not too narrow).
