Anyone know how to colour fabrics using homemade vegetable dyes? I have some plain muslin I want to colour to make curtains and stuff, and would like to try the tie-dye work i used to do years ago.. Cold dyes used then are not really eco friendly, but i have heard you can get good colour just from vegetation. Any ideas?

Beechnut Hulls

I know that at one time beechnut hulls were used in dying clothing. I'm sure there are places on the web dedicated to this.

Home Made Fabric Dyes?

You might try looking at some of the Urban Homesteading websites.

There is also a place called Dharma Trading Company that might make fabric dyes.

Dyes you can find at home

If you want to be a little experimental why not try dying your cloth with turmeric. It is a natural spice you can get at stores and try this is making the tie and dye cloth. I did so with maazing results. There are also some plowers that when dried and powdered could be used as natural dyes like orchids, germaniums, crysanthemums etc.
