Twiceshy asks:Sky lights and heat

I want to install a couple of skylights in my roof, but I am concerned that they will allow too much heat to escape in the winter months, and will let too much heat in during the summer months.

Has anyone here installed sky lights? are they insulated well enough to prevent these heat issues from being a problem?

It depends

Entirely on where you live, the light you install and how it is installed. I have several and live in Arizona. I LOVE the light. I prefer to work under natural light. Mine have been great and I haven't had an issue with heat or cold (or rain) getting in. It tend to rain here all at once. As in over 3 days we get the years supply of rain.

Get several estimates, research them to get the one with the best rating. Then enjoy the light!

Frankie is right

You might also check into "true sun" collectors that are sort of like roof mounted tubes that go through the attic to your ceiling, providing natural light wherever you direct it.

Do you research

They should not "leak" heat in the winter... shop around I'm sure there is a thermal rating system for skylights that you can rely on.
