It has no nutritional value and is a nuisence. It is made of synthetic rubber so has the properties of other rubber products like tyres and glues etc. It is not biodegradeable. It sticks to pavements, goes hard, and is very difficult to remove... costing local authorities a fortune to clean.
Chewing gum has some beneficial effects for some folks, but it is sort of annoying to the environment. Better might be a maple stick or a mint toothpick.
While it might be unsightly, it is a good way to reign in nervous energy, when needed, and a good way to keep the mouth fresher. I see no reason to ban it.
However, there are a couple of Asian countries that have judged it harmful and consider it contraband.
I guess gum is a terrible thing for the environment. However, I use gum to curb my appetite, manage my nervous energy, and freshen my breath. I would not like to see it banned anytime soon!
Chris is right; it is also very useful to those who use certain medications that affect the salivary glands...as in having permanent dry mouth. Maybe the government should put a tax on gumt so we can pay for the cleaning of the sidewalks.... ( Joke! Just seeing if ACCER is paying attention...)
