In cooler situations they're okay
I've used them off and on for a couple of years now, mostly to take the blush off my cheeks. They're okay, but when we're under spotlights singing with the choir I don't think my skin gets to breathe enough and it begins to make me perspire.

Not really better for our faces
The only thing bad to apply to our faces is oil based products. No matter what any cream or makeup company claims, if any amount of it actually penetrated the skin enough to make actually changes, it would have to be FDA (or local authority) approved.
As for the environment I think the impact isn't so much on what the makeup is made of so much as in company practices in research, development, and sales.
