there is quite a business growing up around this concept... is it really a great idea? or a way for the unscrupulous to make money from the guilt of conspicious consumers?

The program does little to change behavior and allowed the welathy polutters to simply buy more offsets.

Somehow I think so too
I have yet to come face to face with a person or a coorporation who have used the carbon offsetting facility or if at all what was the detailed result of that. So somehow it leads me to believe too that this is yet anothe money laundering scam...
But I need to be hopeful so if someone does know more please share...

Is this the same as someone's carbon footprint? But on a bigger scale? Or something like that?

I would think
that this is something that is just another way to scam people out of their money. But I really don't know much about it.

It's a decent alternative, but I almost wish I didn't have a choice as yourself and was forced to decide on another way of transportation.

my thoughts
exactly sagemother.. The only ones who can really afford to pay for this sort of thing are those with pots of money. They are also the ones who consume the most and have the largest carbon footprint. They pay to plant a few trees or whatever, and they can brag about how green they are, with no effort on their part to actually change the way they consume.
