is reusing an item better than recycling it? What would you say the benefits of one over the other would be?

It depends on...

what producct you are talking about..things like plastic bags can be reused a lot of times...many products we get at home...like containers of biscuits, chips, cofffee etc...can be reused to store items...butthen things like broken parts, old pcs etc..need to be sent for recycling..if you can think of any innovative idea to reuse them....good enough...
The point really is to reuse...recycle whatever we can lay our hands on :)
Comments:
almost everything that is thrown out can be recylced in some way, shape or form. That is why people are making a fortune out of going through other people's garbage.

re-use is better

but not always practical.. point is re-using something, means one less thing needing to be manufactured, producing less waste..

RE: Just in general

Generally, it takes less energy to simply reuse an item in its current form, than it does to recycle it by making it into something different
