atula asks:Old toys

My kid seems to be growing up so fast that all his toys are just geting older by the day. THere is one that he plays with one day and the next day it is either replaced with a new attraction, or broken. I hate throwing these away. Is there a remedy?

Long-term toys

It depends on the age of your child. But there are a lot of popular toys that ride short-term trends. These are often mass-produced using plastics - and destined for a finite life of play. While kids find them really appealing, these "fad" items are not the best investment. Whatever your child's interests, there are probably some more sustainable options - like wooden blocks.

That said, it would be wonderful to see toys like Lego and Playmobil made with recycled or bio-composite plastics. When your child grows out of toys, pass them along to local charities, a doctor's office, or playgroup (as long as they are intact and safe for use).

I believe so

One thing you could do is donate them to a social service agency, Toys for Tots, Goodwill or something like that. At least another child will have some enjoyment from these discarded toys.

If you are sneaky..

Your kid won't even notice that you are commandeering his old toys one by one. Take one every couple of nights hang on to it for a week or so, in case he starts asking about one; but odds are he won't.. Then clean them up and give them to a relief nursery or thrift store.
