EPA Proposes New Emission Standards

Posted on Thu Mar 27 2008

train.jpgThe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a proposal which would be the equivalent of taking 750,000 diesel trucks off the road. They proposed new emission standards for diesel locomotive engines, tugs, berges, ferries, and recreational marine engines. These new emission guidelines can cut particulate pollution from these engines by 90 percent and cut nitrogen oxide emissions by 80 percent.

They will add one to three percent to the cost of these engines, but could save $12 billion in health costs by 2030, and prevent 1,500 premature deaths, 1,100 hospitalizations, and add 170,000 working days because people will be breathing easier.
