Negawatt Power

Negawatt power is a method of creating and supplying additional electrical energy through consumption efficiency. This method was first introduced in 1989 by Amory Lovins. The idea is to create additional energy by increasing the efficiency of the energy produced. Imagine if all the energy that people wasted was available for someone else to use when they needed it. Well that’s basically how Negawatt power works.

Energy companies have been using this method to increase the supply of energy without increasing the production of energy, but anyone can produce Negawatt energy simply by making their homes and lives more energy efficient. If there is less energy used then less energy needs to be produced or if the demand for energy increases because of the growing population on Earth, then more energy can be supplied by increasing efficiency rather than increasing energy generation. Simply put, if you turn of your air conditioner for a day you can use that energy for something else instead of increasing your consumption by leaving the air conditioner on and still using other energy.

The benefit of Negawatt energy is that by being more efficient we can directly reduce the amount of electrical energy produced or at least not increase it with a growing demand. While there is still a long way to go in finding alternative and sustainable sources of energy this is a good start to lowering our impact on the environment as a result of our energy consumption. Basically if we don’t waste the energy we already have then we won’t run out of it as quickly. This concept could easily be applied to fresh water sources or any other resources that we rely on. The message here is the same one that environmentalists have been saying for a long time now. Reduce consumption of resources and you will reduce your impact on the environment.
