A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I were in the car, discussing the general public’s reluctance to commit to renewable sources of energy. One argument against wind energy, for example, is that it would take too many wind turbines to provide energy on a large scale. But the answer is simple, my friend exclaimed. If it won’t work on a large scale, just use wind energy on a small scale! Small wind turbines are easy to install and affordable, and can easily provide enough electricity to power a home, business, or farm. Now, small-scale wind energy has become even more accessible. Even if you live in an area with high turbulence or that doesn’t get much consistent wind, you can still harvest energy from the air currents around you—with a helix wind turbine.
Helix Wind has come up with a small turbine that will harness wind from any direction and thus can make use of even the lightest breeze. The company currently manufactures a 2kW model, with a larger 5kW turbine in development and expected to be on the market in January of 2008.
Not only does the Helix turbine make it possible for wind power to go where it never could before—it looks beautiful while it saves the world!
