Pepsico recently bought $2 million worth of renewable energy creditsthat’s 1 billion kilowatt-hoursin order to reduce their impact on the earth, or to green their image, depending on who you ask.
Buying energy credits seems like a cop-out, especially since Pepsi didn’t have to change a thing at their plants, yet made it to the top of the Environmental Protection Agency’s list of the 25 greenest companies.
This video shows a debate over whether Pepsi has done the right thing, or whether they have in fact done anything at all. Are energy credits useful or do they allow companies to skirt the issue and stick with their wasteful and polluting practices? John Travolta is a good exampleas he is quite vocal about environmental issues, he buys many energy credits every year. However, with his five private jets, he also uses far more energy per year than your average person. Is this really helping?
As one debate participant jokes, what makes it even more ironic is the amount of carbon dioxide that Pepsico puts into Pepsi to make it fizz.
